DRAWING ON NATURE

I’ve always been infatuated with multiple images, sequences, and intuitive combinations of images. “Drawing on Nature” my current black-and-white portfolio, combines the elegance and drama of the B&W tonal scale with my affinity for the patterns, textures and rhythms of the natural world.

The prints in this series begin with my Nikon FE2 35mm camera, Nikon 55 Micro lens, TMAX 100 film, and outdoor locations where the human presence is felt harmoniously—if at all. Multiple-exposing on film becomes a kind of improvisational dance with the landscape. Some of my in-camera multiple-exposure juxtapositions are deliberate, planned, symmetrical, and others are intentionally unpredictable and off-kilter. In laying down darks and lights on the film, I’m “drawing” as I did in earlier in my career when I worked in charcoal, pencil, ink. I do, in fact, think of the interplay of light, emulsion, and chemicals as a kind of gesture drawing, as in the original meaning of a photograph as a “light drawing.”

I scan my negatives at high resolution and print on archival fine art papers with Epson printers.
